The West Country Way

The West country way, is still to this day one of my favourite adventures, it was scorching hot but luckily for me the route had lots of streams to cool off in, it was perfect. The trails from Plymouth to Minehead across Dartmoor and Exmoor made up to be a great little overnight adventure and a route I highly recommend taking on. It is a little rocky and steep in places with some technical terrain at times so you do need to have your wits about you. There is also going to be a little bit of hike-a-bike depending on how much energy you have in the tank. Also, a few river or stream crossings. I ended up just walking through all these because it was so hot when I rode this, but there are little stepping stones over most of the streams.

But I think this is a great route for a couple of days on the trails, start midday and head into Dartmoor for a nice camp spot, wake up early and see how good Dartmoor looks early in the morning. If it’s a clear day, it’s stunning.

I took this on with the MTB and I think for the most part it was the right choice, but I think it would be manageable of a big tyre gravel bike. Be warned, some bits will be rough. There is quite a long road slog though between Dartmoor and Exmoor, so it will be useful then. Definitely check out this route.
