The Trans Cambrian way
Doesn’t really need an introduction this is probably the most popular welsh bikepacking routes that many people like to take on the Trans Cambrian Way, a shortish route 120 miles across wales from Knighton to Dovey junction, crossing some incredible landscapes across the Cambrian mountains.
A route I have some history with, the first attempt at this route I was hit with a storm, the storms name, storm Barra if I remember correctly and after a night in incredibly powerful winds, I woke up to snow on the floor and the winds still howling, I would spend the next 3–4 hours trying to cycle around elan Valley reservoir. (it did not look like that picture above.) After which I had to throw in the towel, I had to bail off the route, to return a couple of months later where things were the polar opposite
But that is Wales for you unpredicable. And that is what makes it an interesting and fun place to explore I guess. This is a route that I do think has plenty of challenges along the way, but because it’s quite short, it makes a great 2-3 day bikepacking trip. If you already have some MTB experience but want to do some bikepacking with some nights under the stars then it’s a good place to start, as long as you are happy to ride some quite rough and rugged and of course steep terrain.
Plenty of steep rough technical terrain on this route, so I personally think a MTB is the best bet either rigid or hard tail, but I know a lot of people do take this route on, on their gravel bike. I’d want big tyres though 50mm+ but a MTB position makes this route much more fun.
