Bikepacking the coast of Jersey

Here is a really nice easy beginner bikepacking route, but you probably won’t be able to find anywhere to wild camp so you won’t need to carry too much stuff. It’s short at only around 45~ miles, and it’s mostly paved with short off-road sections but nothing too technical. From old disused railway lines to some coastal paths and quiet country lanes, it’s a real beginner-friendly bikepacking route. A nice way to explore the coast of the largest of the Channel Islands.

The route can be made longer or shorter, being such a small island it’s always pretty close to somewhere and to be honest could just be ridden in a day. But there is a lot of history on this island and lots to stop and enjoy, so might as well drag it out to a little overnight adventure.

Like I said this really is quite a simple route, and you won’t be needing any special bike, just a little more that an out-and-out road bike really. A hybrid or gravel bike is probably your best bet. Just something with a little tread for some of the off-road trails. I mentioned that wild camping is pretty hard on this route as there just isn’t that many remote places, but if you took a hammock there are a couple of little woodlands that you could spend the night swinging between a couple trees. Otherwise, it will be a official campsite, there are a couple but will need to book ahead in the summer. And I’m not sure if they were open in the winter (I slept on a bench) There are plenty of hotels around, but jersey can be quite expensive, especially in the summer months.

As for getting to jersey, can fly, but it’s easier with a ferry with the bike. The ferries run either from Portsmouth or Poole. Or from France, Cherbourg or St malo. They are more common in the summer. It is condor ferries that run these routes and you can book tickets here
